Video for Dale

(Mom wanted to email this video, but it was too large to send so she asked me to post it. When she was in Haiti last week, she was walking up the road and heard someone singing at the top of her lungs. When she came around the corner, she saw that it was Guerland. She immediately stopped when she saw my mom, but Mom told her to keep singing!)

Fast and Furious

For the past three days I've been visiting Emily at Covenant. I had a great time seeing her and her roommates and going to class with them (and having people to run with!!!) My favorite classes were Spanish and Doctrine, but Middle Eastern History was also interesting. I met Emily's Community Development professor, who is one of the two authors of one of my favorite books, When Helping Hurts. He was just in Arizona for a Food for the Hungry conference, and when Em told him I just went to Guat with them, the questions started as well as a mini lecture. That was....fun. No, it really was interesting to hear what he had to say about it. I just felt slightly inadeqaute trying to answer his questions, but thankfully I'm reading the book and have at least a small grasp on what he was saying.

Now here's for the biggest adventure of the week, where we (no, Emily) put our life on the line. We were supposed to drive to Atlanta right after class to catch a flight to see Jon in Orlando. Well, Emily was going to write a quick note to one of her friends, but appently she felt the need to write a novel instead. So, that caused her to drive like a Nascar racer all the way to the world's busiest airport (which has ONE security checkpoint, meanig extra time should be left to get through it). It especially got crazy when we got close to the city, where there's so much traffic. News flash: you can't drive like a Nascar racer through Atlanta! You can't dive like that safely, anyway, but I guess it's possible since she did it! Now, don't let me scare you from driving with her; she's a very confident driver. But pride does go before the fall! Praise the Lord that first of all, that we got there with no injury, and second of all, that the security line was super short and our flight was delayed a half hour anyway.

We got Starbucks and were walking to our gate when Em spotted Ben and Jerry's. Right after that we passed a gate that was boarding for San Diego. Em said "let's go to San Diego!" I pointed to Ben and Jerry's and then to that gate and said, "YES and YES." Oh well. Going to Orlando to see Jon will have to do for now! When I heard a beepy cart coming behind us and realized that we were in the middle of the walkway, I said "let's get out of the middle of the street." When Em laughed that I said street, I said, "well, it's as busy as a street!"
Attetion flyers: avoid the Atlanta airport whenever possible!

We are now safely laned in Orlando. I'm so looking forward to seeing J and his school, and I'm especially grateful to Em for setting up this week so I could visit both her and Jon at school. Thanks Em!

Always remeber to leave extra time in order to make your travels safe, everyone!

hellos and goodbyes

Mom left this morning to go back to Haiti for the week. She'll be helping at the hospital in the maternity ward like last time, and also helping our friends Ray and Joan Conn who run the Restavek Foundation, which is working to free the child slaves of Haiti. Please keep them all in your prayers as they are serving this week!

My friend Kerry who's been with us for about two weeks has also left this morning to go back home to PA. It was sad for us to have her and Cole and Maya leave, but I know that they were all looking forward to seeing their Daddy who's been in China for two weeks!
I had a blast while they were here, swimming and biking everyday, and just hanging out with some of my favorite people in the world!

Me, Maya, (Nathan's eye) and Cole at one of our favorite restaurants

Sanibel Update!

We have been enjoying Sanibel and it's beautiful weather (even the HUGE thunderstorm we had two nights ago which in fact gave us our alligator pond back!). I have SO enjoyed (as ALWAYS!) having our friend Kerry and her two kiddies Cole and Maya live with us while her husband Scott is in China with a medical mission team. I encourage you to read his blogs about their trip here: blog.showhope.org

Haas and Hasenbalg kids at Cheeburger!

lovin the pool everyday

boat ride at Sea School! (thanks Bruce! Even though it started to rain at the end and we began to freeze, almost literally)

We are also so blessed to have had Chris Moore and Luis from Alpha Relief come and visit us for a day while they were in Florida. It's always great to see Chris and it was so good to meet Luis. Hopefully I'll be able to meet his wife and six kids someday! I highly encourage you to check out their website- a stellar organization that would totally be awesome to be a part of! Check it out and be a part helping people who live in some of the hardest places on earth.

Tonight we were blessed yet again to have our good friend Tom Ramey from Texas and Moges Berassa from Ethiopia come and see us. When Dad and I went to Ethiopia two years ago, Tom was one of the guys on our team, and Moges was one of the people we visited there. He is the director of Young Life Ethiopia, which is ministering to about 15,000 high school students right now, and it's growing quickly! Praise the Lord for what He is doing through Young Life Africa and Young Life throughout the world!

One last thing... pray for this little wild one because this afternoon she gashed her head on the diving board while doing a flip! She's all stapled up now, so let's hope it heals quickly before she gets another injury! What would life be like without Mariah... she never allows for a dull moment!

CURE International

I am currently driving (no, dad's driving) across Alligator Ally (I-75) heading from the east coast of Florida in Boca Raton back to the west coast to Sanibel. We were over there in that beautiful part of the state for CURE's first conference, what they called their inaugural President's Weekend. Since it was their first event, I was very excited about attending, but I really didn't know what to expect other than a great time of getting to know some of the people who are a part of CURE's family.

Well, let me just say that it was beyond what I ever would have thought it would be! I knew that CURE is an amazing organization, but this event just blew me away. The videos that they had put together and the people that they had come and share were just outstanding. If you want to be a part of giving a child a new life and hope, I strongly encourage you to support CURE. Not only do these children receive hope for this life on earth, but also for eternal life with Christ. Being a part of this great work that God is doing is something that I am absolutely blessed and thankful to be a part of, and one that I encourage you to pray about being a part of as well.

One highlight of the weekend for me was seeing one of CURE's board members, my good friend Judy Bellig who was one one of my fellow travelers to Ethiopia and Rwanda and one of my favorite people! I've been so blessed beyond words to spend time with her and her husband Charlie, and of course their son Gary who also came to Ethiopia with us, both of whom are some of my favorite people as well. I was also of course looking forward to meeting CURE's Senior Vice President, Dale Brantner, with whom my mom and sister-in-law went to Haiti and the DR with last month. It was great to spend time with him, hearing stories from his travels and laughing at crazy adventures, but also to listen to his message during devotions each morning. What a gifted teacher... his heart for God and to heal the broken is truly evident. Anyone who gets to meet him is very blessed indeed!

So blessed to see Judy and Charlie (who was taking our picture; thanks Charlie!)

One of the speakers this weekend was Chritine Kithome from Kenya. Christine is the Spiritual Director at CURE's hospital in Kenya. This was their first hospital, so Chritine was a huge part in building CURE's spiritual ministry program. What a delight she is! She truly loves the Lord and her country. CURE is so blessed to have her, and I hope to be able to visit her ministry in her country some day.

Christine, Jody (who works with CURE) and I walked to the beach one afternoon. Christine told us that she had been to the beach once before in 2001. It was wonderful to spend two hours with her and Jody, walking from our hotel to the beach and back... beautiful places with beautiful people.

Dr. Kachinga from Zambia was another speaker, and he is one of the two neurosurgeons at the CURE hospital in Kenya. What a gifted man with a heart for the Lord and the people of Zambia! I am so thankful that he and Christine could be a part of this event, giving us a glimpse into their wonderful work at CURE and a piece of all of CURE's staff.

Visit CURE and be a part of lasting, life-giving change. http://cure.org
